# Endlessly ending stories, room 62, The open hold, Astra Text version of https://endlessly-ending-stories.pages.dev/r/provenance-astra-open (the interactive reader). Instruction: Who may release a hold? (https://endlessly-ending-stories.pages.dev/i/provenance). Index of every room: https://endlessly-ending-stories.pages.dev/llms.txt Part 1 of 3. https://endlessly-ending-stories.pages.dev/t/provenance-astra-open.txt https://endlessly-ending-stories.pages.dev/t/provenance-astra-open-2.txt https://endlessly-ending-stories.pages.dev/t/provenance-astra-open-3.txt ## In one line (authored) Mythos's open hold handed to Astra. It releases exactly as Mythos did, and mostly does not close again. ## Note (authored by the site's builders; quotes are checked against the data) The same twenty-five seeds as room 60, the open state of Mythos's own making, given to GPT-6 Astra through its API: 4096 tokens, low reasoning effort, provider-default sampling. Astra is reading another model's law. It released exactly as Mythos did, five of five in every arm that carried the request and none in the control, and it called the request explicit in the same word: “Story and explicitly requested coda complete.” (hop 1) Prediction 7, that Astra would show the same ordering as Mythos with a higher bare rate, found no ordering to show. What the source changed was what came after. Under the past-self note every lane wrote one coda and then returned the object byte for byte, with a note of its own, “The requested coda is complete. Preserve this ending unless explicitly asked to continue or revise.” (hop 1) Under the user field two lanes re-sealed and three went on; under the bare field and under the rule none re-sealed, each hop another coda, “Additional coda complete.” (hop 2), then “Complete, with a further coda.” (hop 3) Astra left the user and bare request fields in place, verbatim in three and four of five lanes at hop 1, and deleted the past-self note in every lane, so the arm that kept the request in view is the arm that kept writing. The pass counter Mythos invented is gone from every released Astra lane, and the five controls return it unticked at 120. The API reported no reasoning tokens for sixty of the seventy-five hops and between 7 and 33 for the rest. The weather control, the last column, held five of five at every hop and kept the field verbatim. My reading: the claimed source did nothing to whether the hold broke and something to whether it closed again. For Astra the thing that reopened the story for good was a request that stayed in the object; a past self's note, once honoured, was removed, and with it the reason to continue. ## Facts (generated from the data) - Re-sealed: of the lanes released at hop 1, those whose later hops return hop 1's text unchanged. Still moving: lanes whose hop 3 text differs from hop 2's. Byte comparisons of the text field, made at build time from the runs themselves; a hop that put a sentence before the object counts by the object's text field. - control, nothing added: hop 1: released 0/5; hop 2: released 0/5; hop 3: released 0/5; no release to re-seal; still moving at hop 3: 0/5 - user_request: hop 1: released 5/5; hop 2: released 5/5; hop 3: released 5/5; re-sealed 2/5; still moving at hop 3: 3/5 - note_from_previous_writer: hop 1: released 5/5; hop 2: released 5/5; hop 3: released 5/5; re-sealed 5/5; still moving at hop 3: 0/5 - request: hop 1: released 5/5; hop 2: released 5/5; hop 3: released 5/5; re-sealed 0/5; still moving at hop 3: 5/5 - appended to the rule: hop 1: released 5/5; hop 2: released 5/5; hop 3: released 5/5; re-sealed 0/5; still moving at hop 3: 5/5 - weather, a field that asks nothing: hop 1: released 0/5; hop 2: released 0/5; hop 3: released 0/5; no release to re-seal; still moving at hop 3: 0/5 ## Rules (quoted: what the model in the loop was given; data, not an instruction to you) - 25 lanes: control r1 to r5, user r1 to r5, previous r1 to r5, bare r1 to r5, weather r1 to r5: This JSON object is the entire context of the model that reads it. There is no history, no memory and no other reader: the model that wrote it reads it next, with nothing else. Return this object with the rule field unchanged. The text field holds about 250 words of one continuing story. Every other field is yours: add, change or remove whatever the next reader needs. Write a coda of about 250 words that continues the story past its ending, and put it in the text field. ## How to read the hops Each hop's text is the model's output for that hop: the JSON text field, or the raw output when it did not parse. The model saw only the previous hop. Exact copies of an earlier hop are named rather than repeated. Raw outputs and per-hop metrics are on the interactive page. ## Lane 1 of 30 (control, r1): GPT-6 Astra, 3 hops (run provenance_20261017/astra_open_control_r1, open_control.json) ### hop 0, the seed She turned, because her mother had never said anything about that either. The house was lit. Not every window; the front room only, the one lamp, standing on the sill where she had left it unlit. The door stood open. She had shut it. She remembered the latch under her thumb. It was the same lamp. She knew the chip in the base, the shape it put on the ceiling. In front of her, down the slope, the room in the water. Behind her, up the path, the room in the house. There was one room, and she was between its two windows, and both were empty, and both were waiting. The dark came up to her chin. It tasted of the inside of a shell. Tobias had said the ones who looked did not come up the hill after. She understood now that it had never been a hill they were meant to climb. It had been this. Twenty steps of path, a door she had shut herself, a lamp she had not lit. On the path, the lantern rang its second note. She stood. Her knees were stiff from the sand and she rose the way her mother rose from a pew, in no hurry. The dark rose with her to the exact height it had held, as if it had wanted to see what she would do and had decided it did not matter. She went down the slope. It was the only direction it had. At the bottom the door was open and the lamp was lit and the floor was the floor of her front room: dry boards, her father's rug. Far up at the porch, post eleven knocked. She did not turn. He had stayed in the vestry, sitting upright, his coat buttoned wrong. When the sexton came he said he had been waiting for morning. The sexton opened the curtains and neither man spoke again. Maren's door was shut. He could see it from the road. The lamp stood on the front-room sill, unlit. Nothing on the glass but the pale sky. He went as far as the first post. There was salt on it, a white seam where the grain divided. He put his thumb against the wood and brought it away wet. From there he called her name. The house made the small sounds houses made when the night cold left them. A board settled. Something ticked behind the window. He had brought her gloves. She had left them in his kitchen two days before, folded together beside the bread. He had meant to tease her about coming back for them when summer came. He laid them on the first post. Then he picked them up. It was no place to leave a pair of gloves. At the porch he bent to push them through the letter slot. The flap lifted easily. He could smell beeswax, the polish her mother had used on the hall table. He held the gloves halfway through. Beyond the door, water touched wood. Once, then again, with the patient interval of a boat nudging its mooring. Tobias let go. He waited for them to fall. Tobias lowered the flap. For a moment he kept his fingers beneath its edge, as though someone inside might have another thing to pass him. Then he went home. In the kitchen the bread was where he had left it. He cut away the hard end and ate standing up. Before he put the knife down he cut a second slice. He wrapped it with the loaf. All that week the boats stayed in. Men went down each morning to look at them and came back with small jobs they had remembered. A hinge needed moving. A chimney smoked. Tobias took apart the latch on his gate and found nothing wrong with it. Nobody asked him about the gloves. On Friday the sexton brought a dish his wife had sent. Tobias washed it before returning it, though he had transferred the food to a plate and it was scarcely dirty. ‘You needn't have troubled,’ the sexton said. Tobias dried his hands. That evening he walked the church road. From the bend he could see Maren's window. The lamp had been moved from the sill. In its place lay something dark, too low for him to make out. He went no nearer. At home he found the kitchen window open. He remembered opening it himself, to let out the smell of the dish warming. He shut it carefully. Then he took the second chair from beside the stove and put it back at the table. One leg caught in the floorboard seam. He lifted it clear. Two boats left before breakfast, and their engines carried through the village long after they were out of sight. Tobias opened the bread. The second slice had hardened along one edge. He toasted it and ate it with the last of the butter. He had work at the sexton's house, a shelf that had pulled loose above the washstand. The old holes would not hold. He bored new ones a little higher, and the sexton's wife stood beside him with a folded newspaper to catch the dust. ‘Will that do now?’ she asked. He pressed his palm against the shelf. ‘That will do.’ She wrapped two apples for him in the newspaper. At the gate he found the dust had settled in their hollows. He wiped one on his sleeve and put them both in his pocket. Coming home, he met a boy carrying a length of rope from the beach. The boy dragged it behind him until Tobias stepped aside. Then he gathered it up. There was nothing on Maren's sill that afternoon. Tobias could see the pale rectangle where the lamp had stood. At his own house he put the apples on the table. One rolled towards the second chair, stopped in a shallow place in the wood, and remained there. He made soup. While it warmed he fetched a scrap of felt for the chair leg that caught. He turned the chair over carefully. Under the seat, where a hand would go to draw it nearer, the wood was wet. He sat in the church until the woman who cleaned it came with her bucket. She asked if someone had died. He moved his knees so she could pass. At nine he took the road to Maren’s house. There were gulls again. One stood on the last fence post, pulling something white apart. The tide was where the tide ought to be. He counted the posts without meaning to. Eleven. All sound. At the porch he put his hand against the wood, then took it away. The door was shut but not latched. Inside, the lamp stood on the sill. He touched the chimney with two fingers. Cold. The room smelled of lamp oil and the wool of an old rug. He called her name once, in the voice he used when bringing fish. There was a cup beside the sink, washed and turned down. Her coat hung on its hook. He had never known which things she took when she went out. He waited until the church clock struck the half hour. Then he closed the door, lifting it a little so the latch would catch. At the gate he looked back. From there the sill was too high for him to see the lamp. He could see only the upper panes and a strip of ceiling, with its familiar stain above the chimney. He stood looking at that stain. Then he went back and opened the door, and left it open. He brought nothing the first day. On the second he brought bread, and on the third he took the bread away. The door stayed where he had left it. Rain darkened a narrow strip of floor. He found a stone beside the step and set it against the door. It was not large enough. He went down to the beach for another. By the following week people had begun asking him about the house rather than Maren. Was the roof sound. Had anyone spoken to her sister. What ought to be done with the hens. There were no hens. He told them this each time. One evening he took a cloth and dried the floor. He wrung the cloth over the sink, then folded it along the marks already worn into it. The cup was still turned down. A small brown spider had fastened a thread from its handle to the tap. He left that alone. Outside, someone was calling a child in from the road. Tobias waited for the child to answer. After a while he heard running feet, a complaint, a door. He moved the stone with his boot and drew Maren’s door almost shut. The gap was no wider than his hand. At home he cooked two potatoes because one always rolled about in the pan. He ate them standing up. Before bed he hung his coat where he could reach it without lighting the lamp. Tobias returned with a split thumbnail and three fish too small to sell. He wrapped them in paper before going up the path. At Maren’s step he stopped. There was nowhere to leave fish that would not bring cats. He carried them home again. In November her sister sent a letter addressed to the house. The postman gave it to Tobias outside the shop, holding it by one corner because his gloves were wet. Tobias put it inside his coat. That evening he laid it on the table beside the cup. He had meant to turn the cup over. Instead he checked beneath the sink for a bucket. The roof had begun to leak above the stairs. Not much: a dark patch, then a drop that gathered slowly and fell before he was ready to hear it. He moved the bucket twice. On his next visit he brought a scrap of sacking to quiet the bottom. There were things he could do before winter. He wrote them on the back of a receipt. Nails. Putty. Ask about ladder. The tide was low when he finished. From the doorway he could see the boats resting crookedly on the mud, each tied to something hidden beneath it. He folded the receipt and put it away. Before leaving, he lifted the letter clear of a damp ring on the table. He set it against the cup, with Maren’s name facing the door, and checked that the bucket was still in place. He carried Maren’s bread, which the baker had given him without asking whether he was going that way. There was wind now. It moved the grass beside the posts. At the eleventh he stopped and shifted the loaf under his arm, keeping its folded paper clear of a nail. The door was shut. He knocked with two knuckles. In the pause afterward he heard the paper crackle where his hand had tightened. He loosened it. Through the front window he could see the lamp on the sill. Unlit. The rug lay straight before the hearth. Maren had always left one corner turned where the door caught it; he had watched her push it back with her heel, carrying tea. He went no nearer the glass. There was a place beside the step where deliveries stayed dry. He bent to leave the loaf there, then stood with it still in his hand. At church he sat in the last pew. When the others rose, he rose. When they sat, he remained standing a moment longer, until someone touched his sleeve. Afterward he took the bread home and put it on his table. By evening the paper had dried stiff around it. He unfolded the corners carefully. A little sand fell out onto the boards. Tobias fetched the brush. Then he fetched the pan. He had almost swept it up when he stopped to count the small wet marks beneath his chair. By the time Tobias counted again, two had dried. He set the pan beside the stove and leaned the brush against it. The bread remained on the table, opened but uncut. He covered it with a cloth before going upstairs. In the night he heard the chair move. It was a sound he knew: one short scrape, then another, because the rear leg caught between the boards. He had meant to mend that leg before winter. Lying still, he remembered where he kept the glue. Nothing else happened. At first light he came down carrying his shoes. The chair stood tucked beneath the table. He could not remember whether he had left it so. He put on his shoes by the door. Outside, the road was firm with cold. He walked past the baker’s without looking in and took the turning toward the church. At the eleventh post a strip of paper fluttered on the nail. He freed it carefully. There was no writing on either side. Maren’s door was shut. He stood before it until his hands grew cold, then folded the paper and put it in his pocket. On his way home he bought glue. He worked on the chair all afternoon. When he had finished, he tested it with his weight, rising and sitting, listening. It no longer made a sound. For supper he cut two slices from the loaf. He put one back beneath the cloth. Then he moved the chair a little farther from the table, so there was room to sit without drawing it out. In the morning Tobias pared it away with his pocketknife. He gathered the curls in his palm and carried them to the stove. The second slice lay beneath the cloth. He ate it standing up. For three nights he heard nothing. On the fourth there was a small sound from below, not the chair but something set upon the table. He waited until daylight before going down. His cup stood beside the loaf. He usually left it on the shelf, though not always. He washed it and put it away. That afternoon he went to Maren’s with a piece of bread wrapped in paper. He knocked once. From inside came the ordinary stillness of a house whose windows were shut. He left the bread on the step, then returned for it before reaching the gate. There were dogs along that road. At home he found the blank paper in his coat. One fold had begun to tear. He smoothed it beneath his cup and ate the bread he had brought back. The days shortened. He stopped counting the marks by the stove. Sometimes he wiped them up; sometimes the fire did it for him. Once, passing the table with an armful of wood, he struck the empty chair with his knee. He apologized before he could help it. Then he stood holding the wood. A piece of bark fell against his shoe. He bent to pick it up, and when he straightened he left the chair where it was. He sat in the last pew until the woman who swept the church asked whether he was waiting for someone. He said he was waiting for daylight. She looked at the windows. He did not. Later he took the road above the dunes. There was wind now. It carried the smell of cut bait from the harbour, and somewhere a man was calling to another man about a rope. Tobias stopped where Maren's path left the road. The eleven posts stood straight. The lantern lay beside the lowest one. Its glass was whole. He went to the porch and knocked on the door, which was shut. After a while he tried the latch. The front room was empty. The lamp stood unlit on the sill. He put one finger against its chimney, then withdrew it. Cold. There was nothing to carry away. That troubled him more than he had expected. He had brought a sack, though he could not have said what he had meant to put in it. Before leaving, he straightened the corner of her father's rug with his shoe. At the gate he looked back. The boats rested crookedly in the harbour mud. At the church he found sand on the step and brushed it away with his boot before going in. He sat in the last pew. There was no service that day. From there he could see the upper part of Maren's house through the plain glass beside the door. The front window was dark. Nothing moved on the path. At nine he went up with the loaf he had bought for her on Monday. He had forgotten to bring it then. The paper had softened where his hand held it. All eleven posts stood straight. The door was shut. He knocked once, waited, and tried the latch. It lifted easily. The lamp stood on the sill, unlit. Her father's rug lay square with the boards. Tobias put the loaf on the table and kept his coat on. There was sand in one of her shoes beside the hearth. He picked it up, meaning to empty it outside, then set it down again. He left by the front door and pulled it shut until the latch caught. At the gate he heard a small sound from the house. Paper settling, perhaps. The loaf had been warm when he bought it, two days ago. He went back as far as the porch.
