The ink under it was his, the same neat upright figures, but the pen had leaned in the last three words like a man leaning on a rail. *Tell Maren the dog's looking at the lad now.* Nobody read it aloud. Tobias read it and took one step back from the desk, the way you step back from a drop you have only just seen. 'He didn't say which lad,' Dag said. 'I wrote what he said.' 'There's one lad,' Maren said. Arne in the doorway said nothing. The set hissed. Maren took the handset off its hook. It was cold, which she noticed because she had expected it not to be. She held it a moment and did not press the key, then put it into Dag's bound hand. 'Nes boat. Your name first. Then the berth. Say it as you'd say it.' Dag looked at her and then at the set, and pressed the key. 'Nes boat, Nes boat, Harrow Point harbour. Harbourmaster Halvorsen.' It was the harbourmaster's voice all the way through, she gave him that. 'Kristiansen. Pell's berth is not free. You're on the north wall, second ring, your own lines. Over.' He let go of the key. Hiss. Then the hiss thickened, the way it does when weather is coming over the hill, and a carrier opened. Nobody spoke on it. Behind it, faint and close, like a boat's cabin with the door shut, a dog was breathing. Then one word. Not Pell's voice. Not a Nes voice. 'Received.' The carrier closed. Tobias was looking at Maren, not at the set, because Maren had gone quite still. He has written it in the log in his own hand under Edvin's line and Maren's 'Which boat' — and there is a second line beneath, covered by his bound hand: 'He said one more thing. Before he went off.' Maren waits to see if he will lift it."] setting: "Harrow Point, a small fishing village on a cold northern coast. Late autumn, about three weeks after the equinox. She watched every letter. *10:04 HM to Nes boat ch.16 — Pell's berth refused, north wall 2nd ring. Reply: Received.* The pen did not lean. He stopped, and then wrote *Not Kristiansen*, and stopped again, and the pen stayed where it was, which was not a thing a pen could do unless the hand holding it had decided to. 'Maren,' Tobias said. 'Say it. You've made Dag say his.' She said it the way she had said the tide was early. 'Edvin's.' Arne, in the doorway, took a breath and let it go. 'Edvin's been dead eleven year, Maren.' 'So has the set.' He looked at her, and at Dag's hand on the page, and took it the way Solveig had taken hers, as his portion and no more. Tobias did not look surprised. He looked as a man looks when a sum comes out. 'Then it answers to him. Not to Dag. Not to you.' 'It answered Dag.' 'It said received,' Dag said. 'It took my name.' 'It took it at the bolt too. She went out past Arne onto the quay and along it, not fast, to Pell's berth, and stood where the first line had hung into the water before Arne took it. The ring was bare. Tobias came to her shoulder. The stones round the ring were wet. A hand's width, no more, the same as at the north wall, and the wet ran away from it along the quay toward the ice house, and from the ice house end, she knew without walking it, back along the north wall to the second ring, where now it would be dry. 'It's come back,' Tobias said. 'It was never meant to stay there. I chose that ring. It let me.' She knelt, which her knees did not thank her for, and put her hand flat into the harbour below the iron. Warm. Warmer than at seven. A stove left in. 'He'll come in here whatever Dag says in the mouth,' Tobias said. 'Won't he.' 'He'll come in here.' She took her hand out and did not dry it. 'And he'll want a line, and the lines are locked, and his own will be in a heap in the fo'c'sle the way the Nes men keep them. He'll look along this quay for somebody to throw him one.' 'And somebody will.' 'Somebody. Not me.' She looked up at him. 'And not you. Hands in your pockets at dusk, Tobias. I want to see your hands in your pockets.' Behind them, in the office, the set clicked once, the way a key does when it is pressed and nothing is said. Then Dag said her name.
