Keeper Anders Holm vanished Mar 2, leaving logbook, barometer at 1003, and brass plumb bob over Kvaløy chart marked "March 19." Ferry Kittiwake stalled as a black ridge rose, flooding Vardnes and opening steps to Kvaløy trench. Dying by a cellar spiral of keeper names, Holm gave Marit an iron sea-lock key and Signe's journal: a living keeper must turn the lens inward. In the trench, Marit dropped the slab, severing a blind beast's limbs. Phosphor-veined Tomas emerged: Signe promised the trench an heir; Vardnes must drown to pay the debt. Marit kicked him into the gears, sinking the ridge. She cranked the lens inward; its green beam hit a cellar mirror, waking a shadow under the ferry, and cracked the desk, revealing an iron dial of 212 names (Solvang at center). Bleeding her wrists to turn it seaward, the shadow spared the ferry and dragged the tower down in a bronze diving bell as fused Tomas rode the beast to a trench city. Docked on a spire, Marit shoved Signe's shade into the beam, pulled "PURGE" to melt the city, and launched the bell up, welding Tomas's severed hands inside. Breaching by Kittiwake, 211 soul-lights shot ashore; Marit's center bulb stayed dark. Seawater-veined, Marit swallowed the bulb as trench-stone fused the engines and Tomas's hands steered for the Mar 19 whirlpool. Marit coughed green light and pinned the hands to the chart with a compass needle, inverting the whirlpool into a basalt chimney that impaled the hull. Eirik rose dry through the ruptured deck with the plumb bob: 1003 was years since the pact began; Mar 19 is the millennial reset. He shattered the bulb in Marit's sternum, igniting her ribs into a living lantern and petrifying the ferry into a lighthouse. Marit strangled Eirik with the plumb line, fusing him into her ribcage-lens as the barometer hit 0000 and the beam turned the 211 villagers into salt-statues above the tide. Tomas's hands tore free, took the sea-lock key, and unlocked the chimney's base—draining the sea into the mantle and baking the statues in abyssal heat. Marit ripped Eirik's jawbone from her fused ribs to pry her petrified feet from the deck, then plunged down the chimney throat—her lantern-chest glazing the vents into a mirror-tube that blasted the boiling mantle-steam upward as a salt-rich deluge, cooling the statues back into breathing flesh. ### hop 32 (Gemini 4 Argon, 432 words) Mar 16, Vardnes (pop. 212): Marit Solvang (47; father Eirik; grandmother Signe, kept tide tables 40 yrs; brother Tomas) noted tide 51m early.
