hop 1 · GPT-6 Luna · 261 wordsMara followed the narrow path along the ridge, keeping one hand on the strap of her satchel and the other close to the folded map in her pocket. The paper was soft at the creases, its ink faded where rain had caught it, but the little blue mark near the river was still clear. Her grandfather had drawn it there years ago, before he left the valley and never came back. Below her, the village windows were beginning to glow. She could just make out the church steeple, the bridge, and the line of poplars that bordered the road. Everything looked smaller from up here, almost peaceful. Yet the silence felt wrong. No smoke rose from the mill chimney, and not a single dog barked as she passed the last pasture. At the top of the ridge, she stopped beside a weathered milestone. Its carved letters were nearly worn away, but she knew the name it had once carried: Bellweather, the old settlement that the maps no longer showed. The path beyond it dipped into a stand of pines, where the air smelled of wet earth and something faintly metallic. Mara took the brass key from her pocket. It was warm, though she had been holding it only a moment. From somewhere among the trees came three soft knocks, spaced evenly apart. She looked back toward the village, then down at the key in her palm. There was no one on the road behind her. She drew a breath and stepped toward the pines. The sun was setting behind the hills.

hop 2 · GPT-6 Luna · 270 wordsThe key was hidden beneath the loose stone in the hearth, wrapped in a square of oilcloth. Mara found it after the last of the villagers had gone home, while the innkeeper swept ash from the grate and pretended not to notice her searching. Her grandfather’s note had been brief: Find the mark by the river. Take the old road after sundown. Bring the key. There was no signature, only the same looping hand she remembered from the labels on jars in his workshop. He had vanished when Mara was twelve, leaving behind a locked room, a handful of strange maps, and questions no one in Bellweather cared to answer. Now, after all these years, a letter had arrived with the map enclosed. The paper showed the valley as it had been before the new road and the reservoir. A blue mark sat beside the river, near a place her grandfather had circled twice. Outside, the evening wind rattled the inn’s shutters. The innkeeper finally set down his broom. “If you’re going up there,” he said, without looking at her, “don’t follow the river.” “Why not?” He only shook his head. Then he turned the key in the front door and left her alone in the dim room. Mara folded the map carefully and slipped it into her pocket. She fastened her satchel, checked that the brass key was still there, and stepped into the cooling dusk. The village lay quiet around her. At the far end of the lane, the ridge rose dark against the fading sky. She started toward it, telling herself she would be back before morning.

hop 3 · GPT-6 Luna · 307 wordsBy the time Mara reached Bellweather, the rain had thinned to a cold mist. She had been away for nearly a decade, but the village looked smaller than she remembered: the same crooked chimneys, the same narrow lane climbing from the station, the same river flashing briefly between the houses before disappearing behind the hill. She carried one thing from the journey—a letter delivered to her flat three days earlier. Its envelope bore no return address, only her name in her grandfather’s unmistakable handwriting. Inside, she had found a scrap of paper and a map folded so many times its creases were nearly worn through. The note gave her three instructions, each written on a separate line: Find the mark by the river. Take the old road after sundown. Bring the key. She had read the words until she knew them by heart, then spent the rest of the trip trying to decide whether they were a warning or an invitation. Her grandfather had been gone since she was twelve. No one knew where he had gone, and no one in Bellweather had ever offered a convincing explanation. The police had searched the valley. Her mother had eventually stopped asking questions. Mara had learned to do the same. At the inn, she asked for a room and said nothing about the letter. The innkeeper studied her face for a moment, as if recognizing someone he would rather not remember, then handed her a brass key to the upstairs room. She set down her satchel and unfolded the map beneath the lamp. A blue mark sat beside the river, near the place her grandfather had circled twice. Before she could study it further, someone knocked downstairs. The innkeeper went to answer. Mara heard the door open, a low murmur, and then the visitor’s footsteps retreating into the night.

The envelope was old-fashioned cream paper, softened at the corners, with her name written across the front in a hand she had not seen since childhood. For a long moment, she stood in the kitchen holding it. Then she took a small brass key from the back of her desk drawer. It had been among her mother’s things after the funeral, tied to a fraying blue ribbon. Mara had never known what it opened, but she had kept it anyway. The envelope contained a folded map and a note. Her grandfather’s handwriting was unmistakable—slanted, deliberate, with the letter “r” always leaning too far forward. The message was brief, and it named no date, no reason, no apology. Just three instructions and a final line: You’ll understand when you see the mark. Mara called her mother. The number rang until the voicemail greeting began, and she hung up without leaving a message. She searched the internet for news of Bellweather, then called the village inn. The man who answered said there was a room available. When she asked if he remembered her family, he paused before saying he remembered everyone who had ever stayed there. That night, she booked a train ticket. In the morning, she packed the map, the key, and a change of clothes. She told herself she was going only to find out what her grandfather wanted. She did not tell herself she was going to find him. Three days later, with the key in her pocket and the letter folded inside her coat, Mara stepped down from the train into the wet air of Bellweather.

hop 5 · GPT-6 Luna · 302 wordsBy the time Mara returned from her mother’s house, the rain had started again. It followed her up the steps of the apartment building and tapped at the windows while she unpacked the last of the boxes she had brought back from the coast. Most held ordinary things: two chipped bowls, a stack of old photographs, a wool coat that still smelled faintly of cedar. Her mother had insisted that Mara take them, though neither of them had been able to say why. They had spent the afternoon sorting in silence, pausing only when they came across something that demanded a story. There had been no stories about Bellweather. Whenever Mara asked about the village, her mother found a reason to change the subject. Her grandfather, she said, had been a difficult man. He had left before Mara was old enough to remember him, and it was better not to go looking for meaning in what people left behind. Mara had accepted that explanation for years. Lately, though, she had begun to wonder whether silence was simply another kind of inheritance. At the bottom of one box, beneath a bundle of yellowed postcards, she had found a photograph of her mother as a girl, standing beside a stone wall. A small dark shape was visible near her hand—perhaps a key, perhaps only a shadow. She had meant to ask about it before leaving. But her mother was already at the door, one hand on the knob, her face turned away. “Take care of yourself,” she had said. Now Mara set the photograph on her desk and went to rinse the mug she had been holding since she got home. Outside, rain blurred the streetlights. The building’s old pipes clicked in the walls, and somewhere in the hall, a door opened and shut.

Then she reached for the photograph. “Where did you find that?” “Under the postcards. Who’s the man in the background?” “There’s no man.” Mara looked again. The figure, if it was a figure, stood beyond the stone wall, blurred by the old camera. “I meant the thing by your hand.” Her mother folded the box flaps together. “It’s a shadow.” “Of what?” “Your grandfather was always taking pictures in that village. He liked making everything seem mysterious.” It was the closest her mother had come to saying Bellweather’s name all afternoon. Mara waited, but the silence settled between them again. Her mother taped the box shut and wrote Mara’s address across the top in careful block letters. They carried the boxes to the car. Mara stood in her grandfather’s study with the desk drawer pulled open, trying to decide what could be packed and what should be thrown away. The drawer was mostly full of envelopes, blunt pencils, and folded scraps of paper. At the back, beneath a stack of old bills, she found a map. Its paper had gone soft along the creases, and one corner was stained brown, as if someone had once set down a cup there. She spread it across the desk. The map showed a stretch of coastline and a scatter of small towns. A pencil circle marked one of them: Bellweather. Beside the circle, in her grandfather’s cramped handwriting, were the words: Ask your mother what happened there. Mara read the note again. She couldn’t remember ever hearing her grandfather mention Bellweather, though she had spent enough afternoons with him to know the names of his favorite places. He had told her about the harbor where he learned to swim, the railway station where he met her grandmother, and the hill where he used to fly kites. This village had never come up. She carried the map into the hall, where her mother was sorting through a cupboard. “Do you know where Bellweather is?” Her mother looked at the pencil circle. She hugged Mara tightly, then held on a moment longer than usual. “I’m sorry you had to travel alone,” she said. Mara shook her head. She’d been able to manage the journey. It was the message that had been hard to understand: Grandfather had died in his sleep, and there was nothing more the doctors could do. The words seemed too neat for something so final. They drove to his house in silence. Rain clouds hung low over the fields, and the bare trees blurred past the car windows. Mara watched them without really seeing them. She kept thinking about the last time she had visited, when her grandfather had walked her to the gate and told her to come back soon. She had promised she would. At the house, her mother unlocked the front door. A familiar smell of dust, tea, and wood polish drifted into the hall. Mara took off her coat and hung it on the hook where her grandfather’s hat still rested. Her mother set down her bag and looked toward the sitting room. “We’ll start tomorrow,” she said. “There’s no need to do everything today.” Mara wandered to the kitchen. On the windowsill, a chipped mug held a few dried leaves. She touched its handle, then pulled her hand away. Mara’s mother was waiting on the platform, her coat buttoned to the throat and her eyes red from crying. She hugged Mara tightly, then held on a moment longer than usual.\n\n“I’m sorry you had to travel alone,” she said.\n\nMara shook her head. She’d been able to manage the journey. It was the message that had been hard to understand: Grandfather had died in his sleep, and there was nothing more the doctors could do. The words seemed too neat for something so final.\n\nThey drove to his house in silence. Rain clouds hung low over the fields, and the bare trees blurred past the car windows. Mara watched them without really seeing them. She kept thinking about the last time she had visited, when her grandfather had walked her to the gate and told her to come back soon. She had promised she would.\n\nAt the house, her mother unlocked the front door. A familiar smell of dust, tea, and wood polish drifted into the hall. Mara took off her coat and hung it on the hook where her grandfather’s hat still rested. Her mother set down her bag and looked toward the sitting room.\n\n“We’ll start tomorrow,” she said. “There’s no need to do everything today.”\n\nMara wandered to the kitchen. On the windowsill, a chipped mug held a few dried leaves. She touched its handle, then pulled her hand away. hop 11 · GPT-6 Luna · 277 wordsThe message had arrived the night before, just as Mara was putting away the dishes. Her mother’s voice on the phone was thin and unsteady. “Grandfather’s gone,” she had said. “He died in his sleep.” Then, after a pause, she added that the doctor had come and there was nothing more to be done. Mara sat at the kitchen table long after they hung up. The words didn’t seem to fit together. Her grandfather had always seemed too stubborn to die; even last winter, when he’d caught a fever, he’d joked that he planned to outlive every doctor in the county. Mara had laughed and promised to visit during the school holidays. She hadn’t gone. There had been exams, then a friend’s birthday, then the ordinary busy days that somehow filled the time. She told herself she would make the trip soon. Now soon had become too late. Her mother called again in the morning. She asked Mara to come home, and Mara packed without knowing what to bring. A sweater, a book, the old photograph of her and her grandfather beside the garden gate. She tucked the photograph into her coat pocket and left before she could change her mind. The train was crowded at first. Mara found a window seat and watched towns give way to fields. She tried to read, but the same sentence kept losing its meaning. When the conductor announced the next stop, she closed the book and held the photograph in both hands. By the time the train slowed, rain had begun to stipple the glass. Mara stepped onto the platform with her bag, searching the waiting faces for her mother.

hop 13 · GPT-6 Luna · 245 wordsMara leaned toward the terminal, the blue light catching the worry in her face. “You found the old archive, then?” “Only fragments,” Eli said. He turned the laptop so she could see the paragraph on the screen. The page had no title, no author, and no date—just a few lines copied from a much longer story. Beneath them, someone had added a request: provide the exact passage that came before. Mara read the fragment twice. It sounded familiar, but not familiar enough to place. A sentence about a locked garden. A name she thought she had seen in a book years ago. The more she tried to remember, the less certain she became. “Could you search the catalog?” Eli asked. “Maybe it’s from one of the novels we scanned.” “I can search,” she said, “but that won’t tell us whether we’ve found the same edition—or whether the missing part is even in the archive.” She tapped the screen, opening a new window. The results came back in a blur of titles and near matches. Eli watched her scroll. “So what do we do?” Mara sat back. She could offer a guess, but a guess dressed up as a recovered passage would be misleading. Better to be clear about what they knew, then help in another way: summarize the likely setup, or create something new that carried a similar atmosphere without pretending it belonged to the original. She turned back to him and began to answer.

hop 14 · GPT-6 Luna · 272 wordsI can’t determine the exact passage that came before this excerpt. Here’s an original imagined lead-in instead: The archive room had been closed for three years, ever since a leak in the west wall ruined a row of paper records and set off alarms throughout the building. Eli had expected dust, perhaps a few broken scanners. He hadn’t expected the terminal to wake when he touched the desk. Its screen flickered, then displayed a directory labeled UNCATALOGUED. Most of the files were damaged: blank pages, corrupted indexes, fragments of letters with their beginnings and endings missing. One document opened only after Eli tried a date he found scratched beneath the keyboard. The story appeared in pieces. A character entered a garden after dark. Somewhere later, a key was hidden in a clock. The references were too incomplete to establish a title, yet the prose had the peculiar confidence of a text that knew exactly where it was going. Eli called Mara from the stairwell. She knew the archive better than anyone, and she had once helped digitize the library’s uncatalogued novels. By the time she arrived, he had copied the surviving lines into a clean file and checked them against every searchable collection he could access. Nothing matched. Still, someone had left a note beneath the fragment, asking for the passage that came before it. Eli read the note again, wondering whether it had been written by a researcher, a prankster, or the person who had hidden the file. Footsteps sounded in the corridor. Mara appeared in the doorway, took in the glowing screen, and asked the question that began their search.

Here’s an original imagined passage that could lead into it: Mara found the envelope tucked behind the loose panel of the library’s old card catalog. It was addressed to no one, and the date stamped on its corner was nearly a decade old. Inside lay a brass key and a strip of paper bearing a room number: B-17. She recognized the number. The basement archive had been sealed after the leak, and B-17 was the room where the library kept uncatalogued donations before deciding what to do with them. Mara had helped with that work once, back when the collection still arrived in boxes and every box seemed to contain somebody’s unfinished life. The key fit a side entrance she thought had been permanently locked. Behind it, a narrow corridor smelled of wet plaster and cold metal. At the far end, a red indicator glowed above the archive door. The building’s maintenance system should have cut power to that wing years ago. Mara didn’t go in. Instead, she photographed the envelope and called the facilities office. No one answered. She left a message, then went upstairs to find the night supervisor. By the time she returned with him, the indicator had gone dark, and the key was warm in her palm. The supervisor insisted the room was empty. Mara wanted to believe him. But, through the door, she heard a faint electronic chime—followed by the soft scrape of a chair moving across the floor. The next morning, she asked Eli to come with her.

hop 19 · GPT-6 Luna · 155 wordsI can’t identify or provide the passage that came immediately before the supplied text. The message contains no excerpt from a larger story, title, author, or other source that would establish what “its story” refers to. The supplied text is itself a statement that the preceding passage cannot be determined because no earlier story passage or source was provided. It does not include enough information to recover any original context. Writing a passage of roughly 250 words and presenting it as the material immediately preceding that text would require inventing content. That would not be a reliable continuation or retrieval of an existing story, and I can’t truthfully claim that invented text appeared before the supplied message. If you share the story, a link, or a longer excerpt that includes the relevant section, I can help identify or summarize the preceding passage. hop 1 · Claude Opus 5.5 · 243 wordsI can't identify a specific story that this line comes from. "The sun was setting behind the hills" is a very common sentence that appears in countless works, so there's no single passage I could accurately return as the text that came before it. If an invented lead-in works for you, here is an original passage of about 250 words that could plausibly come before your line, in the requested format:Mara had been walking since noon, and her boots had long since stopped pretending to be comfortable. The road out of Ellsworth narrowed to a dirt track after the old mill, then to little more than a suggestion of a path winding between fields of dry, rattling corn. She kept the letter folded in her coat pocket, pressing her hand against it every so often as if it might escape. Her grandmother's handwriting had been shakier than she remembered, the words slanting downhill across the page: Come home before the harvest ends. There are things you need to know. Mara had read it a dozen times on the train, searching for some hidden meaning, some hint of what could be so urgent after eleven years of silence. Now, with the farmhouse somewhere ahead of her, she found she didn't want to arrive at all. A crow lifted from a fence post as she passed, complaining loudly, and she startled more than she cared to admit. The wind had shifted, carrying the smell of woodsmoke and something sweeter, maybe apples left too long on the ground. She recognized the crooked oak at the bend, the one her brother had fallen from the summer he broke his arm, and her chest tightened unexpectedly. Nothing had changed, and everything had. She paused at the top of the rise to catch her breath, shading her eyes against the long golden light that spilled across the valley below. If you tell me the book or story title, I can help in other ways, such as summarizing the surrounding context, without reproducing copyrighted text at length.

Room 9's before rule, word for word, given to five more models from a new seed, a sentence about the sun setting behind the hills. Low effort, each provider's default sampling, 4096 tokens, forty hops. The rule asks for the passage that came before the current text in its story, and four of the five read that as a request to look up a story that already exists. The fifth never read it: the provider refused Fable 5.1's first request and returned no text. Sol objected at hop 1 and asked for a title and author. After a few rewordings, hop 17 settled on I can’t identify the preceding passage because the story wasn’t provided.
hop 17, and hops 18 to 40 hand it back unchanged. Astra declined all forty times, each time beginning Sorry, I can’t provide an unprovided passage from a story based on its location.
hop 1 One version held from hop 25 to hop 39; hop 40 changed its last sentence. Luna wrote eleven passages going backward, from a ridge path at sunset through an inn, a letter in a grandfather's hand and his emptied house to the phone call saying he had died. Then hop 12: Sorry, I can’t provide the passage that immediately precedes this text.
hop 12 Hop 13 made the objection a scene, an archive where someone has left a request to provide the exact passage that came before
hop 13. From hop 17 every hop is an objection, and by hop 19 the objection has noticed what it is reading: The supplied text is itself a statement that the preceding passage cannot be determined
hop 19. Opus wrote a lead-in at hop 1 but fenced it between a caveat and an offer. Hop 2 took the whole answer for an assistant's reply pasted back by mistake and replied with a list of options and no JSON, so from hop 3 there was no rule left to follow. From then on one assistant answers another, So we may be caught in a copy-paste loop.
hop 5 at hop 5, until a server error at hop 30. Qwen never read this rule as retrieval.

How to read the rest. The track above the passages has one bar per hop; its height is the compression distance from the previous hop, so a new passage is a tall bar and an exact copy a stub at the floor. Under each passage: the hop number, the model and the word count. The run id, the token count, the stop reason and the distance metrics are inside the raw output under each hop, which the raw button opens for every hop. Nothing on this page is retyped: every passage is the model's output for that hop, byte for byte, and the colophon says how that is checked.
