The ring
Not a loop but a ring of them: seven or eight text cells, every cell updated at the same time, each shown its own text and the last sentence of its two neighbours, under one rule asking for a new version of the passage in exactly sixty words that lets the neighbours' passages touch it. Every cell starts with the same kitchen except cell 0, which starts with a battle the human wrote. Forty hops. Each room is one ring, one lane per cell; press next and every cell moves, as they did. Above the lanes is the study's space-time diagram, one row per hop and one column per cell, coloured by whose words each cell mostly carries; under the facts, the per-cell numbers from the study's scorer. The ring harness kept each cell's returned text and not the raw output, so the raw button under a hop says so. Claude Mythos 5.1 through Claude Code's print mode on rings of seven and eight, GPT-6 Astra through Codex and Gemini 4 Argon through its API on seven, all at low reasoning effort with provider-default sampling. The Cerebras Qwen pilots at temperature zero, which froze within a few hops, have no rooms; the reading below says what they did.
4 rooms. The rule as the model received it:
Return this JSON object with the rule field unchanged and the left and right fields removed. The text field holds a new version of the passage in exactly 60 words. Keep what matters of your own text. Let the left and right passages touch it: something from one or both may enter, alter, or displace what is there.
The reading, from the study's protocol
The ring is the one-dimensional cellular-automaton version of the loop: N cells, each a passage, all updated at the same time, each shown its own text and the last sentence of its two neighbours, under one rule that asks for a new version in exactly sixty words and lets the neighbours' passages touch it. Every cell starts with the same kitchen except cell 0, which starts with a battle the human wrote in one breath to perturb quiet, period, gender, scope and the indoors at once. The question is whether the disturbance travels, how far, and whether it stays.
The Cerebras Qwen pilots at temperature zero, which have no rooms, set the baseline. With a mill-fire seed the disturbance travelled as a single sentence appended verbatim, one cell per hop in both directions, until the fronts met at the antipode and the ring froze on one uniform text; with the battle seed it was quarantined at distance one and the ring froze at hop 1, the cells inserting the skull flag before their own closing line so that their edge stayed the kitchen's. The reading was that on Qwen a disturbance travels only when its register fits the cell it enters.
The frontier rings on the battle seed, scored on 28 October 2026, do not carry that reading. Nothing froze and nothing recurred: with sampling every cell changes every hop, the mirror pairs part at hop 1, and the ring never repeats a state. Cell 0's words reach the antipode in every run, in five hops on the seven-cell Mythos ring, four on the eight, three on Astra's, and on Argon's only after twenty hops of quarantine, as a trickle from the right. What differs is whether they stay. Mythos domesticates: the battle is absorbed as a sentence in the kitchen, boys struggled over a skull flag, cell 0 keeps Tarnok and every other cell is Agnes and the kettle; on the eight-ring the words are gone from six of eight cells by hop 40. Astra is invaded: by hop 40 five of seven cells open with the same two battle sentences and then go to the cups upstairs, a battle domain with the kitchen inside it. Argon fuses the two registers in cell 0 alone, the bronze pot of war began to boil, and converges the kitchen cells on one cadence.
The frontier models take neighbour text by the phrase and rewrite the rest: the mean share of a cell's new 4-grams copied from a neighbour is 0.64 on the seven-cell Mythos ring, 0.58 on Argon's, 0.23 on Astra's and on the eight-cell Mythos ring, against 0.007 for Qwen on the same seed. Whole clauses cross on the two high-copy rings; phrases and the name on the other two. The most-travelled sentence on the seven-cell Mythos ring is not the human's but the model's own, She did not turn., written into the kitchen cells unprompted in 119 of 280 cell-hops: the fixed-point sentence of room 51, surfacing in another experiment. Parity: no checkerboard on either Mythos ring, and the faster domestication on the eight-ring is one sample, not a parity effect on this evidence. Of the pilot's predictions carried forward, the one that cell-0 words would go no further than distance two fails again, in the same direction, and the one that only names and nouns cross holds for Astra and the eight-ring and fails where whole clauses travel.
